Durham is a beautiful city. A large loop in the River Wear almost encircles the old city centre which is on a hill in the centre of the loop.
Here, modern riverside apartments run alongside the river, and the castle and cathedral can be seen above them in the background. Both Castle and Cathedral were built in the 11th century, though both have been modified over the centuries. The castle is now occupied by Durham University and about 100 students live in it.
The area around castle and cathedral is a world heritage site and is well worth a visit. Guided tours around the castle are available, and you can explore the cathedral at your leisure. The only disappointment is that photography of the magnificent interior of the cathedral isn't allowed.

Thank you Bob - the transverse parts of the weir are part of a fish ladder, and we saw fish leaping upstream.

Thank you Therese - this is one of the classic postcard views of Durham, but I didn't catch it on a sunny day!

Thank you Tony. The walk along the riverbank beyond the bridge has a really rural feel, despite being in the heart of a city.
