Prudhoe Castle is some miles west of Newcastle and has a commanding view over the Tyne valley.
The castle is one of the most interesting castles of Northumberland and in the Middle Ages it was one of the most important. Whoever held it controlled the middle length of the Tyne valley, and could command one of the principal north-south routes through the country at the point where it crossed the river. In time of war, it was a formidable obstacle in the path of the Scottish armies and is the only Northumbrian castle to have never been conquered by the Scots.
The castles first owners were the Umfravilles but in 1381 the castle and lands passed by marriage to the Percys, earls of Northumberland.
Here we are looking from the entrance through the barbican to the gatehouse.
I remembered the steep climb to the castle from our only previous visit. It is just as steep but well worth it to see the castle and views.
A beautiful capture and composition. The path leads into the pic. and the world behind . Beautiful historical building and as always a nice and interesting explanation. A fav.
