I went to the Cold War Bunker with Dad yesterday, and I was rather taken with this control room. I've taken this shot from a higher balcony where boards and telephones were lined up. The people on the balcony would be collecting information about a nuclear blast, then writing the info on boards and showing them to the floor below so they could map out the likely area that was affected. In this shot we can see the maps they would have used to plot the destruction zone and affected area.
It was interesting to see something from the Cold War, and I could imagine me manning a telephone, speaking to the French or Spanish about what was happening if I'd been around then! - Lucy
It's quite fascinating, I think. Your parents probably remember the booklet 'Protect and Survive' which was delivered to every household so we could prepare for the Bomb!
Historical, interesting, fascinating - yes, all of that - but mostly just downright bl**dy scary! Thanks for reminding us what the 'cold war' was really about, Lucy - just as we seem to be on the edge of another one!
