This spectacular building is on the bus route I travel on to visit my mum at St. Luke's Hospice.
The Cavendish Building on West Street, with it's imposing terra-cotta fa-ade, was built in 3 stages (1907, 1910 & 1919) and is an example of an early motor'sales and repair shop purpose-built for the Sheffield Motor Company Ltd with showrooms at street level and billiard saloons on the upper levels.
The building is now a series of small shop many of them aimed at the needs of students at the nearby university.
Thank you to those who have enquired about mum's health. She is very comfortable at the hospice but gradually getting weaker and sleeping most of the time. The staff are wonderful and look after dad and the family as well as mum.
Great capture of this interesting facade of the shops. thankd for the interesting info and the link.
Still thinking and little praying for you Mum. Hope she will recover complete soon.
@seattlite Thank you. I was amazed it was a car show room until I realised only the very wealthy would have a car when the building was erected. Katharine
