Recruiting for the Roman Legions?

A trip into York city centre a couple of days ago, and into the Museum Gardens. Lots of childrens activities going on for school half term, this example being a group gathered around two Roman soldiers, and most of them seem quite engrossed in what the soldiers are telling them.

Roman York was founded in 71 AD when Cerialis and the Ninth Legion constructed a military fortress (castra) on flat ground above the River Ouse near its junction with the River Foss. The fortress was later rebuilt in stone, covered an area of 50 acres, and was inhabited by 6,000 soldiers. The earliest known mention of Eburacum by name is from a wooden stylus tablet from the Roman fortress of Vindolanda along Hadrian's Wall, dated to c. 95–104 AD, where it is called Eburaci.

Near to where this group is meeting is one of the best preserved sections of Roman wall in York. Most Roman remains are buried below developments over the following centuries.

Great shot - kids enjoy these things so much, they don't even realise how much they are learning. (And some of them could sure do with some military discipline 😜)

They look totally engrossed, probably they'll go home and play Roman soldiers if they can be dragged away from their computers 😃😃😃

Beautiful shot and story. Amazing how Rome dominated the known world those days. Nice to see children interested in the history of their country.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and fav, they are very much appreciated.

I'm a great believer in the importance of learning outside the classroom, and it was good to see that there were lots of activities for the children during school half term. Almost all the children in this shot were fully absorbed with what they were being told so some effective learning was taking place.
