Having driven past signs for this ancient monument innumerable times, and glimpsed it from a distance, today we visited for a closer look. It is 72 metres tall and was thought to be of Iron Age origins, carved from the underlying chalk stone, but archaeological investigations have shown it to be 16th or 17th century, made from yellow bricks. Today's figure is created from white painted breeze blocks and lime mortar but it still looks impressive!
