On our trip to the beach with our grandson to dodge waves (reasonably successfully!) I noticed that where the groynes had gaps the force of the sea had impelled pebbles into them. Here is an example where they are lined up to fit the size of the gap. As I looked around there were several examples of this and yet I had never noticed it before.
