There in Memory

The building still exists but the 74" (Grubb-Parsons) reflector was destroyed in the 2003 firestorm that swept over Mount Stromlo and into Canberra. This telescope had been in situ since 1955 and was the largest and the most advanced in use at observatory. Now the building remains as a memory for what once was so remarkable on that spot.
Love the sky in this lovely shot. Such a pity about the destruction.

@boxplayer It is or was. The raised part of the roof used to retract so the telescope could scan the skies.
