Detail from Red Cream Vase

I wish I knew more about how this piece was created. Looks like the top layer has been carved into, but I have no idea how the basic piece, with the red layer on top of the cream, was created in the first place.

I like this close up better, the detail in the red flowers and trees is quite spectacular.
