Drunk On Its Own Scent

The claw of the magnolia,
drunk on its own scent,
asks nothing of life.
...Sylvia Plath

I am waiting for the large Southern Magnolia tree to open its glorious blossoms. The tree is located across the street and I only discovered it last summer. I walked over to see the tree last week and noticed some of the leaves turning brown, dropping and many of the buds looking small and dried up.

I talked with the owners about the tree looking stressed. It turns out either the sprinklers were turned off or not working and we have had very warm weather this spring...and hardly any rain. They appreciated the heads up and are giving their magnolia tree some extra water. I hope it can recover but I might not see many healthy blooms this year.

Ours are finished, with all the frosts the flowers didn’t last long this year. You hopefully will do a lot better.!

Hope they can rescue the tree. We had to give our drip system some extra time already. It’s nice to have the cooler weather this week.
