I have vertigo.
Vertigo makes it
feel like the floor is
pitching up and down.
Things seem to be spinning.
It's like standing on the deck
of a ship in really high seas.
...Laura Hillenbrand
I have positional vertigo. It happens mostly when I move my head up or down or lay on my right side. My eyes see the walls and ceiling start to spin counter clockwise.
I got it 10 years ago, after a car accident. After visiting the head and neck surgical nurse (and her magical chair), it went away.
It came back last year and I was sent to physical therapy with no lasting results. Frustrating. So, I asked to go back to the head & neck surgical nurse. Yes, she still had a magical chair.
In layman's terms, the nurse explained that crystals (or rocks in your head) dislodge and go floating in the upper ear canal, then your balance and equilibrium is thrown off.
The nurse puts your head in different positions to get the crystals to clear out of the canal. Then, this time I was told to keep my head and neck level for a week. Easier said than done. However, if this is accomplished, the crystals all merge together and become too large to go floating in the ear canal.
Well, after a week I went a whole four days with no dizziness or vertigo. The bouts are less frequent and milder. Maybe one crystal is still in the canal and after another treatment, I will be dizzy free...
Totally feel for you, I have experienced this several times. I self perform the Epley Maneuvre to get those crystals moving, which seems to work mostly. Horrible experience. Wish you recovered soon.
Goodness......I never knew that. I get vertigo sometimes, I put it down to my deafness and Tinnitus........but not that I might have an ear full of crystals !!!
Indeed...The crystals in my ear canal were dislodged when I fainted and hit my head twice in 2021. It took me about six months after the head hit to realize that the imbalance I felt when turning my head was not going away. I went to my ear doctor/surgeon and he diagnosed the dislodged crystals by gently turning my head in different directions. Then he gave me a set of head exercises that actually corrected the problem in only one session of me doing the exercise at home. So far everything is still okay. However, the doctor said it could return.
Wow! I didn't know any of this (reading your narrative, Cathee, and people's comments). Yikes! I sure hope your dizziness goes away and stays away! Take care!
