Bird Rescue

Found this baby magpie in my garden today and he is unable to fly and has difficulty walking. The parents were busy protecting him all day. I put out water, found some worms and phoned Wildlife Rescue. Unfortunately after being on hold for 10 minutes I gave up! Now I'm not sure what to do :)
Help!!
Could you possibly google some info, I guess the biggest risk will be predators while the poor thing is on the ground. Good luck with this Denise :)

@hermann Thanks Sally. Went out and checked on it now that it's dark- it's sitting in leaves but a stray cat was close by! So I've put a styrofoam box (with holes) over it and a brick on that! I googled info but no help there for this situation. Here's hoping he survives the cool night and I'll try wildlife rescue again tomorrow :)

You are so compassionate! I came upon a sparrow in the same condition this fall, and I thought, "Poor little thing is doomed," and went on with my walk. Are magpies rare?

Oh, what a sweet thing. Good for you in what you did. There's not much else you can do. Unfortunately, nature can be cruel.

They are quite easy to rear.We reared them as kids.Just feed them bits of mince meat or worms if you have them and keep some water handy and he/she will probably come good in a few days.Would be better to put in a box in the house if its cold.

@peterlgrave Peter has good info. Since the parents are close by, they would probably accept it back into the nest if it's reachable. Good of you to care for it, Denise.

So sad, I hate when that happens. And he's such a cute little fella. If he's ok in the morning I would also try caring for it.

A beautiful capture of this great bird. Often the only and best thing to do is give nature a chance. Leave the bird alone and give the parent rest . I know for our blackbirds this is normal way to grow up.

Sweet capture. Hope it makes it. Fingers crossed ...

We usually collect any injured etc birds and take them to the University small animal vets. But I would agree with Peter re having him in a box. I was thinking about ants getting on to him if he is on the ground.

The parent should take care of feeding him you said they were still around. But them For him. Gorgeous capture of this Littlebird

What a sweet little baby magpie!!! Sometimes the young ones just haven't learned to fly yet. Hopefully he was able to fly away soon after this shot.

Oh dear. Always an anxious position to be in. You've done a lot already. There's a natural process at play here.

@denisedaly @hermann @flyrobin @tellefella @cejaanderson @kareenking @peterlgrave @mbemis @lindacarol @seattlite @ladymagpie @milaniet @thresheg @pyrrhula @junep @terryliv @radiogirl @tjchapa @lealady @gigiflower @lan @kathiecb Sorry for the group reply but I felt it the best way to go. Thanks to everyone for ideas on what to do :) Well, we made it through the night! Let him out this morning but that cat was stalking around - so thought it better to put him in the box, right way up with wire over the top! One adult is still around and it can easily reach through the wire. I feed it mince as Peter suggested - only took 2 pieces. Tried phoning again, only to get all recordings as yesterday! Will see what tonight brings. Will put update in 2nd album tonight. And yes Heather, what is your baby doing over here? Please come and get him :) Thanks everyone for being so kind :)
