This is called society garlic or so my neighbor who gave it to me has told me. I am not sure why it isn't just plain garlic unless it is curltivated more for the flowers, and therefore more acceptable to society, than for the garlic which I have never seen from the plant yet.
Beautiful! Love the way the flowers are standing so elegantly against the black background. I was given some back in Louisiana and always wondered at the name, too.
@eudora According to eattheweeds.com "It’s called Society Garlic because Dutch settlers to South Africa thought it was a more polite spice to use for flavoring dishes than true garlic particularly for social events."
Now we both know! I have featured this flower before and didn't remember what I found out last time! Thanks for your kind words Diane and the visit!
@timewalker Well, Pam, I think that is really so very nice of you! It is just a simple shot of my flowers against the window shutter. Sometimes I get lucky! ;~}
I've never heard of "Society Garlic" so I'd say that source is a bit suspect! Garlic is garlic as far as I'm concerned, but maybe it was "society garlic" because it wasn't quite so smelly?
I really like the simple composition against the dark background. A great - and interesting - shot!
