Roger - El patriota

PLEASE READ- This is not my photo, but the last posted photo from Roger..posted in April.

I don't know how many of you may know of the situation in Nicaragua...In April, a civil protest was met with a government response that included the killing of peaceful protesters. Since then, there has been a massive civil uprising which in turn has led to more and more repression and violence...more than 300 people have been killed.

Roger, @psicoroger, is a dear friend of mine, my Nicaraguan "son"...(.the "psico" in his name is because he is a psychologist, having put himself through university first in accounting, and then realizing that he was better suited to people than numbers, a second degree in psychology.)

As you can see here, he also protested the Daniel Ortega regime as being corrupt and repressive.

Last Monday he was arrested...it was 48 hours before family and friends found him in prison, alive but severely beaten. He is being charged with terroism, arms smuggling, building weapons, and harm to the state. He is facing 20 years in prison.
Oh how terrible!

Oh how terrible to read your story. I knew there was trouble because we have a holiday booked there this year which I doubt will be going ahead. Although we have been keeping up to date with the situation, I hadn't realised that it was quite so bad. I do hope he can be helped.

What a shocking thing to happen to your friend. I do hope the situation eases and he is not convicted.
He posted some lovely photos to 365.

A very sad and confronting story. it is all the more disturbing in that our press/media do not even mention what is going on in Nicaragua. It also touches on the helplessness I feel when confronted with injustice in the world.

Oh - how terrible. Your personal involvement has allowed us to see to the heart of a situation which we are normally so far removed from. Such trauma and helplessness is hard to comprehend.

Unfortunately, there are more and more democratically elected police states. History has not taught us anything and we are still powerless.

@fbailey @30pics4jackiesdiamond @helenhall @nobled @danette @ethelperry @bkbinthecity @kipper1951 @robz @haskar Thank you all for you kind words and thoughts...and even though there is personal involvement, being so far away gives a sense of dissonance and helplessness and just another part of one's life....Amazing how we seem as a people, as humans to be regressing in so many parts of the world.
