@ljmanning You asked about how to do the light painting ... easier than you might think. Camera in manual mode and on tripod. Also manual focus. I focused on the wick of the candle while the lights were on in the room. There was black background behind the candle (a piece of black poster board). 8 sec exposure, ISO 100 (slowest on my camera) and F 7 or thereabouts. With lights out, I used a small flashlight (torch) with pinpoint light or as close as I could get and "painted" the lines against the black background. Voila! If you get behind the subject and "paint" with the flashlight facing the lens, the lines are more defined and brighter. Good luck.
