Everyone Sing His Name

When I was a kid I wanted to be Rupert Bear. In fact I think I still do. He got to frolic around in beautiful water-colour countryside, his best friend was a badger, he never had to go to school, his world was full of wood imps and mermaids and magic and everyone spoke in rhyme. Never mind Paddington or Winnie The Poo, Rupert is the bear for me. This is one of my collection of Rupert annuals (1953) - mostly bought for my by Mum!

Only problem is, could I get away with yellow check trousers?

Rupert, Rupert the Bear,
Everyone sing his name,
Rupert, Rupert the Bear,
Everyone come and join...
in all of his games!
I had lots of Rupert Bear albums as well but my dad gave them all to a colleague who collected them - which I think was a poor financial decision whenever I go past The Haunted Bookshop and see what she charges! I loved the stories but always found the dog on the left to be a bit scary!!

Oh yes! I had loads of these, also bought by my parents. I used to like the painting pages where all you had to do was add a wet brush and the colours would appear. That's magic!! and vintage!! Thanks for the memories!!

Yes we too have some Rupert Bear in the bookcase & this is perfect for the vintage theme ! I remember when I was reading to the kids at night you could get away with reading the short rhyme if you hadn't time to read the whole paragraph !

Well, gee whiz...I seem to have missed something important in my childhood! I have never met Rupert Bear until today! And wikipedia told me more about his history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rupert_Bear

Obviously my childhood was lacking in something significant. I never heard of him. Hey, I BEARLY heard of Pooh!
@hwy61 Thanks for the link - it was nice to find out about him.

@sytse @hwy61 It seems Rupert is a very British bear! I hadn't realised that he'd never gone global - perhaps he should throw a pair of yellow check trousers in a suitcase and go on a world tour!

Helen, I think you are right...he could be like "Flat Stanley" and go on tour!
