The water in this photo is called entrepotdok, all the houses you see here are converted warehouses. The water in the Amsterdam canals are all connected and flowing in the river Amstel and Het IJ. The last is connected to the IJsselmeer. Until 1932 when they completed a dyke in in the North of the Netherlands, the IJsselmeer was called Zuiderzee.
Oh my Zuiderzee! Thank you for explaining your canals! I loved Amsterdam when I was there a few years ago, loved the canals and the wonderful house boats.
