In service since 1908 (with a few closures over the years for upgrades and security issues), this funicular railway links the railway station in Pau with the Boulevard des Pyrénées and the castle.
A fave for this gorgeous and beautifully accomplished photograph. I'd add another fave for the times I've had the opportunity to ride one of these in far-flung places...and though utilitarian, they seem to quaint!
Great photo.
I'm enjoying your Pau photos as a long time ago - long before internet and social media -one of my university friends went there on her year abroad when doing her languages degree. I just knew it was in southern France but it hasn't come to mind in a long time.
@sarah19 We were lucky to be based there for four and a half years, between 2007 and 2011, so it was a wee trip down memory lane for me. We loved it there. Close to mountain and ocean. A great location.
I learned something new here. I did not know what a funicular railway was. And I found out too that the song, "Funiculi, funicula" was written to commemorate the opening of the first funicular cable car on Mount Vesuvius.
