Another shot from Thursday's visit to the Père Lachaise Cemetery. I love the avenues of trees and the cobbled 'streets'.
Fun fact : in France one only 'rents' the ground in a cemetery where one is buried. Periods of time vary from 5 years to perpetuity, depending on the graveyard. However, some, like Père-Lachaise, don't offer a contract for perpetuity and if no-one in the family pays the rental, once the initial rental period is up, then the remains of the person are removed and placed in an ossuary. The ground is then re-rented. The famous people in Père-Lachaise are exempt from this treatment ... naturally!
Ooh super shot and what a fun fact! I didn't know France did this. I remember visiting the Beinhaus in Hallstatt in Austria where only the skulls were kept on shelves and they were painted with the person's name and a picture indicating cause of death! Assorted "cross bones" were under the shelves beneath them but all mixed together. Macabre but utterly appealing somehow!
Lovely leading lines. Interesting facts about the cemetery. Interesting that one just rents the area where the body is laid to rest. Guess that's another reason why more and more people are choosing cremation.
Well spotted and as always, beautifully captured! The leading lines are superb! Such interesting information about only 'renting' the ground in the cemeteries in France. My 365 lesson for the day! :-)
