We finally managed to get a day for walking and did a 17 km loop over some of the lower tops in Gairnside. We'd previously picked out a few distant cairns that we hadn't been to, and so we made up our own walk encompassing those cairns. We started off at Gairnshiel Lodge - a beautiful shooting lodge on the banks of the river Gairn. We passed a couple of old derelict farm buildings on the hillside (which you will see on another day) and lots of shooting butts (which you won't see). It was hard going at times because we weren't always on path and the heather was deep! The weather played the game and we only had one big rain shower. A very satisfying day after a few frustrating days of cabin fever. :-)
Hooray! I’m so glad you had that day of walking. I know how much you love that—the hike, the pursuit of new Munros etc. Beautiful lodge. I look forward to seeing the derelict farm buildings!
What a stunning view! I especially like the treetops in the backdrop behind the lodge. Glad you got your walkabout. I'm about to head out into a potential 5k rainy walk, but as long as it's not big, I'll be glad to have the air in my lungs!
Love this.
The names in your walks remind me of the area where I taught in Aberdeen before our children were born. There was a Gairnshiel Avenue for one, but I had no idea where the names were from. Good to learn now.
