I love how the mountain hare often travels on the snowy tracks, rather than the heather. It must be easier for them. We saw so many hare footprints in the snow yesterday, but only one hare.
We had a rather epic walk. We ended up doing 28 km over difficult, snowy terrain, and ended up walking the last 2km with head torches. A good work out for the hip flexors, lifting the feet through the snow over vast expanses of terrain. A little soul destroying at times, and we took it in turns at trail breaking. We never met a soul up there. The silence was, at times, overwhelming.
Another reminder however, if one is needed, that the underfoot conditions can change everything. Pace slows significantly when walking through snow.
This is the beginning of our walk - heading up to the first summit, Drum Cholzie. The snow got a lot deeper as we ascended. It was a beautiful day though and although we were exhausted on our return home, we were so happy not to have missed this day of weather. A true bluebird day with no wind.
