The National Aviary is on my mind since I’m planning a visit next week, so I thought I’d fill in today’s spot with a photo I took there recently. This is a Eurasian Eagle Owl. I love its distinctive orange eyes and mottled plumage (a handsome mixture of buff, brown and black). The wing span of a Eurasian Eagle Owl can reach a whopping 6-1/2 feet! Remarkably, individual Eurasian Eagle Owls can be reliably identified by voice alone, because each has distinct vocalizations. Amazing!
Wonderful photo and information in your narrative! To me this looks just like the owl that is used in the television show "Longmire;" now thanks to your photo I finally know what type of bird they used!
