All's Quiet Lesson Learned

Many thanks to Stephanie @tristansmum for suggesting I crop my All's Quiet image. My posts are SOOC or with very minimal processing, because processing is so new to me. Cropping other than "as shot" isn't something I ever thought to do, but I will going forward. I'm learning so much on 365!

With this crop, I considered eliminating the open water at the top of the image; but doing so took away the zig-zag effect of the ice, so I only went this far. I'd love to receive some feedback on this new version of All's Quiet. The original can be viewed here.
Beautiful fav!

I like the cropped version so much better. The road in the background of the original was a big distraction. With the ice and the cat 'o nine tails in the foreground the scene appears much more quiet. I crop almost everything I shoot to some degree or another. I'm hoping that someday I can compose a shot without having to do that.

@ziggy77 Thanks so much, Jo!

@pej Thank you so much for the feedback, Paul! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment! The line of snow in the original's background was actually the path that I like to walk on around the lake, but I definitely can see now how it looked like a road and was a distraction. I've learned so much from folks like you since I joined 365 six months ago!

Having compared the two, I prefer the cropped view because on the original my eyes are drawn to the trees in the background rather than the zigzag. Have to confess I don't crop much, just yo take out something I hadn't seen when shooting the shot or to home in on the subject if there is too much around it. Well done for experimenting.

Well, I seem to be outvoted but I like the layers of the original, the context it gives, and the sense of spaciousness. The cropped version feels tight and as if the wonderful curves lead you nowhere

I actually like them both, but I like this cropped version best and I also think it conveys the feeling of All's Quiet better.

Definitely better cropped!

This really is neat in the cropped version - love how it stresses the zigzag idea and the feeling of isolation. You feel like you're standing right there on the edge. Fav

Looks very pretty, Janet. I've learned so much on here over the years and I'm still learning. I like both versions, too, but I think I like this one just a little better .

@jgpittenger I appreciate you commenting, Jane. Thank you! Photography, like art, is so subjective. I can definitely understand the points you made. Thinking it through, I like the original since the snowy path around the lake that I like to walk on is visible in the background. Then, I also like the cropped since it focuses my attention on the sculptural Winter cattails, which I love. To crop or not to crop is a bit of a conundrum!

@skstein Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, Sandy! I appreciate your time and opinion. I like both, too. Each one tells a different story, I think.

Pretty composition tones and textures.

Interesting comparison, Janet! For what it's worth, I can still see the zigzag on the cropped version too.

It's difficult to be objective when it's all the surroundings are so lovely, but this end result looks very tranquil.

I prefer the cropped version too. It looks more peaceful and the cattails are more evident.
