I’m 54, and I can remember my Mom holding the snow contest when I was little; so it’s been a tradition for a good, long time. Every October, she would ask us to pick the date we thought we would get our first 1” of snow that Winter. I remember how much fun it was to watch the calendar and the weather in hopeful anticipation of being right!
I continued the snow contest tradition once I had a family, and I added a prize for the one whose chosen date is closest to the date of our first 1" snowfall — the winner receives a homemade dinner of their choice! I added a rule, too — everyone must attend the snow dinner without complaining about the winner’s menu choice. This rule results in much teasing and laughter as everyone thinks that what they’d have chosen had they been the winner would surely have tasted way better. The kids are now 29 and 25, and the snow contest is still going strong. They both came home today for The Snow Dinner in honor of my daughter’s win; and a fun-filled, love-filled day was enjoyed by all!
I wonder — do they know the joy in this Mama's heart at having them so near?
What a great idea, and what great pov, dof and light in this capture, fav for me. I especially like the way this family tradition helps to preserve the excitement children feel about the first snowfall (actually, I still feel it now, in my late 60s).
What a wonderful story. My 'children' still love the various traditions that we have carried on since they were little. I like how you have framed this and your use of dof. Super.
