In America termites eat wood. As these mounds in Australia are not close to trees, I'm curious about what they eat? Gorgeous photo, love the light playing on the waving grasses.

Some termite species live only on wood, others feed on humus from the soil, grass, leaves. So a termite mound does not have to be built next to a tree.
