snowdrift

Mountain pine, sunken in deep snow. Just the tips peep out, make a shadow play with the sunlight.

Mountain pines are common in the Alps, at altitudes between 1000 and 2700 m. They grow where avalanches often go off and all other tree species are completely destroyed. The growth is crooked and shrubby. They reach a height of 1 to 3 m. The branches often form an impenetrable tangle (as I have experienced several times).

Photo taken during a snowshoe hike on the mountain Krippenstein, Upper Austria.
Terrific composition - great use of shadow!
