The town houses in Krumau do not impress by special extent or excessive splendor in the decor. It is a contemplative, human-bound beauty that is reflected in the home ensembles. Measurements, proportions, ponderation, organic lines and living surface composition - this characterizes the largely intact townscape. Most of the town houses in Krumau were built between the 16th and 18th century. They still appeal to the visitor today.
Wow, totally different and utterly fascinating, perfecly proportioned. Do you suppose the lower part was virtually window free for purpose of protection? Would love to see the inside.....the clouds, too, are amazing!
In your hands these town houses are made to look most special and you pass on with your representation in pictures and words, an invitation to enjoy and appreciate their unadulterated and effortless style.
You are such a master of both your photographic artwork and beautiful language with which you surround your image. This is a stunning photo by any measure, but even better when paired with your philosophical narrative.
I would like to comment on a few remarks and observations:
The windowless ground floor area:
These houses in the photo are immediately behind the old castle wall. So it was harder for attackers to invade these buildings in the front row. Furthermore these windows in the lower facade zone are conspicuous. They are very small and form narrow slits. There is thus a strong suspicion that these were embrasures. They allowed the use of ranged weapons, at the same time high coverage.
Yes, even visiting the living rooms would be very interesting - to see how the interiors of the houses are developed, how the daylight acts here, how a staircase is led, how the walls and ceilings are realized, what a look out of a window appears. I did not try anything in that direction. I am afraid it is enough for the inhabitants of Krumau when the tourists flood the streets.
The facade is the face of a house, the windows are the eyes of a house. They give the house its character and personality. It is a serious intervention in an old town house, if instead of lattice windows with internal division single pane glasses are used. Structural modifications of this kind can strongly affect an architecture.
Fortunately, the old town of Krumau was widely spared from such structural changes.
Believe it or not, those two houses remind me of two hillside houses in Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles. And I can't think of two more different places, otherwise.
@jerome Thank you so much for all that information Jerome, the detail adds a great deal to understanding and appreciating the images you're posting. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share with us.
Great light and textures and what an intriguing design those houses have! I was interested to read your explanation of the lack of windows on the lower levels.
@golftragic Thank you for your kind words, dear Marnie! I am really happy if you like to read my comments on the pictures! That encourages me to continue. Thanks for your nice attention.
Thank you very much for your kind comments!
It's very nice that there are so many people who obviously appreciate modest but dignified architecture. Thank you for this keen interest! I'm very glad about that.
