Poorly Pany FZ1000 by jesika2

Poorly Pany FZ1000

I've had Pany FZ1000 for 3 & a half years now and really like it. It does all I want and more. There's clever unexplored stuff hidden away in its little insides. My plan had been to run it to the ground and then replace when it called time. I didn't expect the wheel to fall off - the 4 way wheel that is - now held on with electrical and gorilla tape. It still works, I just have to be very gentle with it, finger nail rather than finger tip.
I'm not sure what to do; buy another, buy a different model to supplement this. The official replacement is the FZ 2000 and it's too heavy. Others with a one inch sensor are compact in size and don't feel comfortable, no real hand grip.
Maybe Photokina later in the month will provide answers. In the mean time, gently does it.
Poor poorly Pany
Oh, how frustrating! I hope it can be repaired. And if not, that you will find a comfortable and worthy successor.

@bernicrumb Thanks, Berni. I have a strong feeling that if Pany cooperate and produce something similar to the FZ2000 (big heavy brother to FZ1000) at Photokina, prices will fall & I'll just get another FZ1000. My hope anyway, because it's a really good camera and I'm comfortable with it.

Hate it when you have to replace a car you're happy with but is no longer around.

@angelunderwater Thank you, Jane. I think FZ1000 will be around for a while yet. Jessops are currently selling it for £428 with cash back deals. I really do not know what to do. A camera that was brilliant when new will still be brilliant even if it's out of date and technology has moved on with more bells & whistles.

@jesika2 sometimes the new stuff is not that good and you never use the new features. Seems a good deal at Jessops. You could be down to just going Eeny Miny Moe

oh no, but I love your workaround for now! It is hard to let go isn't it?

@koalagardens The wheel was way off centre & sort of "flopped around" not responding to touch. I managed to get it back in place & with the tape holding it all together, I can now use the wheel if I'm VERY careful. This is a camera I really like, we get on well together and it does all I ask. In fact I've learnt a few more of Pany's clever tricks this year, probably will never use them. In camera selective colouring, multi images to name just 2. Much easier when we had instamatics or box brownies! LOL
Thanks for your comment

@angelunderwater Indeed. To buy, or not not to buy? THAT is the question. Sorry, we've had a Shakespeare theatre in town all summer LOL

I think you've done a great repair job. You won't get much sensible advice from me I'm afraid - someone suggested recently I start a camera shop ...

All my cameras are 2nd hand. I always wait for the new models to come out so I can get a good deal on an "old" model. I'm with FBailey though, I have quite the collection.

@fbailey I wonder why???? Can't have been the nice man in your local camera shop could it? Jim just says buy it, it'll come out of my weekly 2/6 (used to be half a crown but went up!)

@joev I've never bought second hand, Joe, and never as soon as a new model was introduced. FZ1000 works, it's just this silly wheel which with care - and sticky tape - I can manage. New models will probably be introduced later in the month at Photokina. FZ1000 is 4 years old and now heavily discounted. Perhaps they are selling stock because they are no longer producing it.

Update. The "Keeper of the Coffers" made an executive decision & told me to go buy a replacement FZ1000. He reminded me that the money would come of my weekly 2/6, used to be half a crown allowance (Brits of a certain age will understand that, the rest of you won't!) I went to York Camera Mart, a local independent store & did my usual futile haggle with Lee. I had to pay him! I'm an old lady & I've got a bus pass, shouldn't have to pay for anything now. I get the cash back next month, Lee will remind me by email. It's all set up like the old one but I couldn't understand why everything was a dreadful blur. What had I done wrong? What was wrong with the camera? Should I take it back? Then my grey cell activated itself (you know, that thing in the head that lets you think). Diopter! All sorted. First test shot of Sam's Rose, a fitting test.
I will still use the old one, everything works except the wheel & Lee tells me that it probably could be repaired but lots of ££££.
Between them, these cameras will last as long as I need them to.
