Every plant visible, other than the Alder Buckthorn (Brimstone butterfly baby food tree) on the right, has decided to live where IT wants and not where I want. My garden is tiny, designed to provide for as many insects as possible at larval stage. Oregano, Knapweed, Buddleia, Verbena Bonariensis are welcome, but why won't they live in the soil??????

@koalagardens thanks. This shot doesn’t show the areas specially planted for insect larvae. The big mass at the front is the Oregano which tries to block the back door. Much loved by flying insects. But I have Birdsfoot Trefoil, Ladies Bedstraw, various Scabious and other plants which support several hundred invertebrates at larval level.
