I have used that expression a couple of times and it occurred to me that some may not be familiar with the term. It is used when the weather goes from either warm and rain to cold and snow or the other way. So you get snow and ice and yuck. When I went out for lunch the trees were coated in ice. Later it warmed up and I drove home in rain with standing water on the roads in places. This fun weather continues today. I tell myself to cheer up because if this was all snow we would be buried.
Hey Joan I would prefer more snow than the wintery mix which we have been experiencing the last month........it's very messy and yucky!
Great snowy scene........I took one similar to this that I will be posting today!

Ah, what a beautiful tree! It seems to bring life to the photo, which is lovely. What fun weather...
Here, we have just been given the gift of 4 inches (10 centimetres) with 12 more inches coming in the next 24 hours (30 centimetres). Well, it IS the gift-giving season, eh?
Gorgeous, love the pinks coming through the snow in the tree. Be safe out there on the roads! Of course you people in Maine probably know how to drive, when there's too much mix in the south all hell breaks lose. Since people can't even handle driving in the rain in jacksonville, I'd hate to see what would happen with ice.
Beautiful shot. When I visited Portland and Boston last year my favorite things to see were the frozen tree branches :) I really like how you can still see the fall colors in the trees here too
Beautiful! Looks like pink peeking through, but I am on my iPhone so I will have to check it out again tonight. I like where the tree is set and how it sort of leans. The snow is very pretty. Feels like a magical place!!
Even when you know it's going to be around for 3 or 4 months, I imagine there is still something magical about the first snowfall of the winter... this certainly has an air of magic about it - not least the tree that looks pink!
Lovely shot Joan. I think that living in conditions like this would be OK for week but then the novelty would wear off very quickly. I'll take sub-tropical any day.
@ladygator@ithinkithunk@kt8ird@jan20 I thought you might be interested in the fact that the color here is those little berries I posted a picture of on November 21st and is not leaves. In the background is a hackmatack (?) tree that is an evergreen that is not evergreen. But you don't really see it here.
@vignouse Actually not our first and this is actually ice frozen on this little tree. Do you ever get anything like that. It melted before nightfall and that was the good thing. But it is magical once you are safely home.
Finally sitting down to my computer now. This is a gorgeous tree!! So much better then on my iPhone. Wow! This is a really fantastic picture. Still feels magical.

Right...so you say...one doesn't have to shovel rain. Now, I've just come in from shovelling and I say, "bring on the rain!"
