As it was the 50th anniversary of Churchill's funeral I thought I should feature something of the college named in his honour. The rather stark 1950s modernist architecture isn't universally popular but it sits within such beautiful grounds that I like it - almost more that the modern Moller Centre with its glass tower which seems to apologise unnecessarily for the low lying grey brickwork of the original buildings. There's been an interesting series of programmes on Radio 4 about Churchill this week and although his classics dominated public school didn't suit him he studied avidly as a young soldier - partly because his father wrote him a damning letter about his wasted education when he finally scraped into the military academy at Sandhurst. I'm sure he was very proud to make it in to Cambridge as a college.
Such a marvelous tribute to an iconic champion of freedom. I have always been fascinated by the sharp wit, intelligence, bravery, and tenacity of Winston Churchill.
@phil_howcroft yes - I tend to take a Churchill snowdrop every year though they haven't peaked yet so I'll have to go back. Thought it looked sort of tearful for a remembrance. Though I doubt he'd be impressed by tears!
I love the architecture of Churchill College. The Moller centre is a wonderful place to learn in. My pal who is the conservator there - we met down a muddy hole in Chester as archaeologists, really hit it off and have remained great friends - has some amazing jobs like framing probable locks of his hair for display and listening to recordings of him that have never been played so they can be conserved/catalogued/archived etc. What an orator! A truly great man. I can remember the funeral on the box I must have been 5 and all the cranes bowing in his honour quite an amazing tribute - everyone was so sad - lots of weeping.
