For an unpromising wet walk I ended up with four radically different photos to chose from today. In the end I went for seasonal shots (there's another in Extras) Scudamore's punt station had been invaded by a dragon boat - there were lots of local TV and radio people down doing interviews and official photographers lining up shots of the nice girls who were (presumably) going to row it down the river for Addenbrooke's Hospital charity. I had to lean precariously over the dock, duck under a Chinese flag and hold the dog in one hand to get any sort of shot at all.
As a consequence of Richard's passing I searched out the 3rd year PhD student who looked after me as a first year. We got on well - he was a great person to work with. He was doing a PhD before embarking on his MD and introduced me to opera amongst other things - it was always playing in the lab. He also wrote odd short stories which were entertaining despite his appalling handwriting and spelling (he wrote half in capitals - he had been to a 'progressive' Los Angeles school which gave creative freedom but not much of your actual basics). Anyway - he went on to become an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and is now an expert on neonatal brain tumours, cerebral palsy and other brain diseases of newborns in San Francisco. That has to be a job of emotional extremes.... Anyway - I've been in text conversation with Rachel about it and find myself thrilled to be having scientific discussions with my daughter. Happy Chinese New Year!
Always nice to know where associates have gone and what they have achieved. I have trouble remembering their names! The Chinese New Year goes round the world!
