While doing some trimming in the garden this morning I spied something moving .. and this fellow scuttled out... Large Headed Weta ( Hemideina megacephala.. Body is about 2 inches long with the antennae are about 4 inches long.. this putting his legs in the air .. is his way of telling me to back off... hence why the photo is not perfectly focused.. He was returned to a tree out of the way of my secateurs...
What a weta! I had a cat that used to catch these and bring them in to my bedroom to eat. I would wake to the sound of her crunching on the weta eat all except the back legs
