pohutukawa buds by kali66

pohutukawa buds

get -pushed this week from MzzHope is Imogen Cunningham style botanicals in black and white,

Sooooo addictive, I had four different shots I could have put up tonight! might have to go ace next year ;)

These buds will open very shortly, but I liked the fuzziness and star patterns at the tips. Pohutukawa is a New Zealand native tree, the red flowers open at Christmas time, so it is known colloquially as NZ Christmas tree.
@mzzhope, thanks for a lovely push, i enjoy this sort of thing and the reverie it produces, I am learning about the black and white conversion also, using less contrast than I normally would. pity I cropped the top off a bit close.

I am always fascinated by these close ups of flowers, the detail and design is amazing. Like the B&W processing.

What a great push - the textures and shapes of this plant are lovely

Yes, the textures are great! I like that when we are icy cold here, I get to see lovely flower pics from the other side of the world! What a neat push!

Very pretty.

I agree, the fuzzy ends and stars pull your eyes into the image. Very nicely captured and processed!

Lovely - something I've never seen before - love how 365 takes me all around the world.

Very pretty in b&w!!

What an interesting shot. And doesn't it work well in B&W.

I've found b/w nature shots so tricky and you've nailed it here. Well done

Lovely composition and detail. Maybe you'll post a coloured picture of them after they open? These are mentioned (in fact are part of the evidence) in one of Ngaio Marsh's murder mysteries set in N.Z., her native land. In that book they are referred to colloquially as Pootacows. Do people still call them that?

@tristansmum that is just an old mispronunciation, English speaking peole can have trouble with pronouncing Maori names, but there was a great effort to politically correctly teach the correct Maori pronunciation in schools and on TV and such from the 1980s so it is less common these days

Great BW shot. Great focus.

such lovely contrast and texture :)

@tristansmum which book? i'm not recalling just now... i love all of Ms. Marsh's mysteries :)
December 12th, 2013
@northy I think it was "Colour Scheme"--set in a resort with hot pools, during World War 2. I love her mysteries too--she really knew how to use the English language, although sometimes I think Alleyn is a bit too perfect.

@kali66 I see. The book I'm thinking of was set and written during World War 2, and i'm sure there have been many changes for the better since then. Thanks for the information.

I have never noticed the star and dots n the bud.

An instant fav. I think black and white is often more revealing of details than colour. This is an inspiring shot.

looks like coral
