I attended my first members night at my newly joined photographic society. A number of booths were set up with the theme of lighting. I even got to borrow an amazing flash light (don't own one) and this was the result. I was a little overwhelmed by the whole evening but I haven't been put off as people were so welcoming and helpful. I did struggle with my camera settings and the other (expert) member who has a fujifilm camera wasn't there. Hopefully I can get more specific help next time.
Joining a camera club is a great idea, you will be able to learn so much from the other members. I have a couple of flash units that I rarely use. When lighting a still life I prefer to use led lights. They provide a constant light that can be adjusted for intensity and colour balance. I find them so much easier to use. However, flash units are much more powerful and versatile and can also be adjusted for intensity so if you can learn to use them at your camera club you may decide they are right for you.
