Wintry Falls

Lincoln, Rhode Island

I was in the mood for a waterfall photo today, and with that in mind I went to the Albion Falls in Lincoln. When I picked my way down an ice field to the banks of the river, I spotted this twisted root growing above ground and decided it would make an interesting foreground object for the overall scene. The pine needles scattered on top of the snow made an interesting texture, as well. I still wanted the waterfall in the scene, though, so here's a case where the 16-35mm lens becomes an ideal choice.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-6CbHRpC/0/XL/2014%2003%2007_0012%20copy-XL.jpg
Lovely. Interest all the way into the picture. It does look cold :-)

You still have snow? Poor guy! We're expecting 18C this weekend :O
Lovely overall composition - made me freeze even though I'm in the warm living room! :)

Was this waterfall frozen this winter at all? I always like looking at your photos in Smugmug. It's interesting for all the reasons you state. I also like the brick and trees behind the waterfall. Seems like it was sunny for you today.
