Catch of the Day

My Sunday Brunch Meetup Group was going to a restaurant in nearby Woonsocket, today, so I decided to stop at Lincoln Woods along the way. My plan was too look for folks fishing out of kayaks, but just before the beach area I spotted this fly-fisherman up to his waist in the water. That alone would have made a good photo, so I parked, grabbed my camera and headed over to the beach. Just as I was looking for a decent spot from which to photograph him, he hooked this rainbow trout. The only position from which I could photograph him and the trout at the same time was from this side view looking straight into the sun. It wasn't my preferred background or lighting, but in this case, capturing the moment was the priority.
Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, and boost black. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
@flauschigerkeks Thanks, Nina! Yes, he really did stand in the water. Most people sit in chairs on the shore, just like you said. When people fly fish, though, they wade out into the water. It makes sense if you are fishing a small stream, but it does not make sense in a pond!
@cejaanderson Thanks, Jane! The reflection worked really well, at least. The lighting was very harsh, though.
@flauschigerkeks No, the "fly" is the lure tied to the hook. They make a lure out of thread that looks like an insect. When they cast, they whip it into the water and pull it back fast. To the fish it looks like a fly hitting the water and the fish tries to eat the fly.
@lilminimonka Thanks, Brianna! That's "Ron's First Rule..." lol Take the photo of the scene. THEN if you have a chance, move around, recompose, whatever, but don't wait to get the first shot. I learned that years ago trying to photograph wildlife.
@cejaanderson Thanks, Jane! The reflection worked really well, at least. The lighting was very harsh, though.
@uncommonjed Thanks, Jed!
