Dating to 1897, this well preserved one-room schoolhouse sits near the center of what was once the Belknap Village section of Johnston. As is common in every one-room schoolhouse I've seen, there are two front entrances to the building. This was not a safety feature as would be true in a building built today, but was rather a means of segregating the sexes. Girls entered through the door on the left, and boys entered through the door on the right. I always found this concept amusing, since there was no gender segregation once inside the building.

This image is a tone-mapped HDR (High Dynamic Range) composite of 9 images taken in 1-stop increments. Tone-mapping was performed in Photomatix Pro and the resulting TIF brought into PSE. The black and white conversion started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Great picture. Can't imagine going to school in such a small house! :D
