There is a beautiful waterfall in Burrillville that I was hoping to photograph, today. I picked a time of day where the contrast with the falls would be extremely high since I was planning to do a high contrast HDR black and white of the waterfall. Now, the observant among you will notice that the photo I've presented is not of a waterfall. Oddly enough, a good waterfall photo demands that water actually be flowing over the falls. When I arrived in Burrillville, I was rather surprised to find that the water level was below the top of the dam, so there was, in fact, no waterfall. Fortunately, I remembered that this radio controlled airplane club visits Stump Pond in Smithfield every Tuesday, so that's where I ended up for today's photo. Instead of a waterfall, you have this photo of three club members at the pond, one of whom is taking his plane out of the water. "What's the fishing pole for?" you may ask. That's to retrieve planes that run out of gas or stall before they reach the shore. Simple and effective.
Post processing started with a neutral filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, and boost white. I also applied a selective dodge on features too deep in shadow. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
How interesting, I bet these people have a lot of fun with their planes and the rod is a great idea to save having to get too wet fetching the planes! How odd about the waterfall, the one time you want a photo it doesn't flow haha, oh well, next time its going to be bigger and better! Can't wait! :)
