Beau shows every sign of being a koala in top health condition which is so gratifying at a time when so many are so ill all along the east coast. Thank you for the lovely comments on my photos, every one is appreciated.
Am fascinated by these beautiful creatures. Is the white fur on Beau's forearm typical of all KBs or do they have (some) markings that are/can be individual?
@vignouse one short answer to what can be a very long discussion - habitat loss. the predictions are the koala will be extinct by 2050. no tree no me says it all. the main disease we are seeing as a result in the northern koalas is chlamydia in the eyes and/or urogenital systems. thanks for asking :)
@s4sayer the white underside of the koala is typical and fairly much the same on all koalas. However their rumps have a mottled pattern which is completely individual. The base of their bottoms is white, but the patterns of spots and mottling going from grey to the white is different on each animal. You can't see Beau's pattern too well because there is some bokeh and leaves over much of that area in this photo :) oh and they are not bears, that's something we really battle getting across! they are truly fascinating, I couldn't agree more.
@koalagardens
TYF the correction. Am I correct in thinking that they Koalas are their own discrete species? Looking forward to the book...reading/absorbing it before it becomes a Christmas gift.
@s4sayer indeed they are the only one left in the Phascolarctos family. Being a marsupial they are most closely related to the wombat :) there is a gorgeous song if you check you tube by Don Spencer - "please don't call me a koala bear". if that doesn't have you both rolling about laughing nothing will :) https://youtu.be/fB2y52jfRdc
I dare not click on the song; I know it but the tune eludes me and I don't want to have it in my head as well! Thanks for letting people know in the nicest possible way that they aren't 'bears'. I have found myself correcting people over the years, also. Great shot of this wonderful boy.
@kchuk he does look strong, those arms! I haven't seen any interactions with the other fellas at all, so it's anyones guess for now .... maybe he managing to fly under the radar?
He does look a picture of health. It’s very alarming and extremely sad to think that koalas will be extinct by 2050. Do koalas ever breed successfully in captivity. (I love the song btw. I even find myself on the other side of the world correcting people when they call them bears. It infuriates me so I can only imagine how you feel)
