Arkys lancearius Walckenaer - what a name for a very tiny but impressive spider. This probably a female as they are the larger - around 8mm. They hunt by ambushing and those spines on the legs help them to seize and hold their prey which are even smaller insects.
We really have an abundance of insanely interesting critters here :) Thank you for the awesome comments on my photos.
What an odd looking creature with its legs of different sizes... and speaking of which, I can only see six legs - are the other two hidden beneath its body?
You really do! That was my first thought - another magical looking creature! Fantastic detail and it is a beauty. I think if I were to visit - I might get my self in trouble investigating some of the magical creatures I'd see - probably be afraid of the wrong things (like that giant but, per you, harmless, spice and intrigued enough to get far to close to something that could do me some serious harm! LOL - I enjoy your photos to no end! Thank ful you have a fantastic eye and gift for these wonderful shots!
@vignouse I think your inner glow must have occluded your vision a little as I count 8 :) First pair really long, second pair pretty long, third pair the shortest of all for stability, and final pair longer and pointing towards the rear to anchor her onto the leaf.
@pamknowler it was quite hilarious because the nature of these is that they tend to hide on the underside of leaves in order to ambush. every time I would get the phone over her and ready to focus she would whip under the leaf. I would twist the leaf over and it was like a dance! At 8mm I was not at all fearful of this tiny but impressive little killer :)
@elatedpixie to be honest, I never think of the wildlife here being dangerous except for a few snakes (and I rarely see them as they tend to see us first and run, well errr slither, away fast), and a couple of spiders.
So if you visited we'd have a blast investigating. I have no idea how many hundreds of critters that are at least this amazing I still haven't found yet they live under my nose here!
I've survived so far and have all these photos to prove it ;)
"Insanely Interesting" pretty much sums it up!!! Fascinating, but they give me the chills! Nicely photographed...I probably wouldn't have hung around that long to get a photo!
