I've been absent a couple of days as we went on another adventure exploring our beautiful Vancouver Island. If you look closely and enlarge this you just might see my 6'1" tall husband, Ron, at the base of this giant Douglas fir Tree. Here's some info I stole from the web: Big Lonely Doug is a gargantuan, old-growth Douglas-fir tree standing alone in a recent logging clearcut near Port Renfrew. Lonely Doug is a tree with a trunk as wide as a living room and stands taller than a downtown skyscraper. Doug’s total size comes in just behind the current champion Douglas-fir, the Red Creek Fir, the world’s largest, which grows just one valley over.
The fact that all of the surrounding trees have been clearcut around Doug gives the visitor a perspective that is unique from anywhere else. The approach to Doug follows a logging road off of the Gordon Main that travels through a forested area that suddenly opens up to expose the clearcut and Lonely Doug rising 230 feet to its upper branches. That is as high as a 23 story office tower. Anyone planning to visit Doug needs to be wearing solid hiking footwear and be prepared for steep terrain on the path that leads to Doug’s trunk base. Please walk softly around and near Doug, since loosening the earth at Doug’s base will quicken the erosion and give Doug less to hang on to as he grows older.
Wow this is fantastic! Thanks for sharing the info. Love seeing your husband at the base as it shows just how big this tree is. Seems so sad that the surrounding big trees have been cut! Fav!
That tree is BIG. And then you see Ron and realise just how big! I wouldn't have spotted him if you hadn't poimted him out - he is a very good frame of reference! Interesting info and great shot.
wow wow wow, this is gigantic after I found Ron. Read the book - The Hidden life of trees, I wonder if Doug enjoy the space or rather miss the conversation.
Wow, that's incredible Kim! At first I thought - 'oh that's just like the Douglas Fir in our back garden', which is big, but not that big! So glad you included your tall husband for perspective! Great shot of this impressive tree.
OMG! I wouldn't have noticed Ron under this tree. It is so huge and I have never seen anything like it. Please do not make me meet Ron - I am only 5ft4in tall, haha.
