A really crappy shot but I want to remember this day...
Just home from the ER with my son... he’s been weak and powerless for weeks with lots of stomach aches. He had various colitis tests done which all showed good results but no one could explain his pain. Then 10 days ago he started getting fevers, headaches, a sore throat and worse stomach pains. Doctor thought it might be strep so he started antibiotics. He improved quite a bit after just a few days. Then yesterday morning (day 7) he woke with red spots all over his body. His eyes and ears were swollen and he felt bad all over. So back to the doctor we went and found out it wasn’t strep and he was probably having an allergic reaction to the drugs. She also ordered a mono test because a rash can occur if you take amoxicillin. I was giving him benedryl tonight at 8pm and he said he felt like he was swallowing his tonsils. I think he freaked himself out and thought his throat was swelling so up to the ER we went. The doctor was able to look up his results and confirm that he DOES have MONO which explains so much. Finally we have some answers - why he’s been so tired and probably a big part of his stomach pains as well. Apparently the spleen can become enlarged and get tender. He’s not allowed to do any sports until he has an ultrasound next week to confirm its size. Such a relief to know his UC isn’t the cause.
Oh poor fella, that's most uncomfortable. All the symptoms sound pretty classic, bless him. Really glad it isn't the UC, but sorry he is feeling sio poorly. Heartily wishing him well from my corner of England xx
Oh no, poor chap. Plenty of liquids and rest is the best medicine. David had mononucleosis (glandular fever) in the 1980s and lost a lot of weight. It took him a couple of months before he recovered.
poor lad - sounds really scary - but good it's mono rather than anything else. He really will need to take it a bit slower for a while, mono really knocks it out of you
Oh gosh so sad that he has had to go through so much at such a young age. Maybe he gets over this and finally has a healthy spell for a very long time like the next 90 years.
I know that has to have scared him - and you - terribly. So glad to hear it was something more easily treated - though miserable for a while. I imagine he feels some better already knowing what this is. Love to all of you and prayers for a speedy recovery.
@helenhall He's still a bit red and itchy and VERY tired but doing okay. He had an ultrasound on his spleen this morning but we haven't heard the results yet. No PE at school or baseball for a while.
Poor guy! I missed this one. I had mono in college right before finals and I couldn't understand why I kept falling asleep and not panicking over studying! It zapped all my energy! By now, he is probably over the worst of it and feeling much better.
