My Friday morning French conversation group was a bit diminished today, so the two of us went to this Benedictine abbey, together with my colleague's husband, who is an expert on this building's history. After they left I stayed and took some photos, trying to get a feel of the place, and also the colours of the marble columns. Some of these are original, others are copies made from casts from the originals, which are in museums in Philadelphia and New York. The cloister was finished in 1271, restored in the 1980's, and represents the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture in the region. Just wish I had moved a tiny bit to the left, and then the green window frame would have been hidden by the central column. I suppose I can go back sometime - it's been there eight hundred years, it will still be there next week.
Your words reminded me of when went on a holiday to the South Island of NZ when we first came to this country. We didn't visit Christchurch and I said at the time, "It's OK, we can come back - it'll always be there." And then they had the earthquakes and many buildings fell down or have had to be demolished!
@navigator It's camping car heaven here. When i took the photo of Jasper on the beach at Argeles on the 6th I noticed that there were many vans parked in the camping site fronting the beach.
