It was not possible previously to get a decent photo of the war memorial, as it was surrounded by palm trees, casting shade or blocking the view. Now, thanks to the red palm weevil (a.k.a. 'the photographers' friend'), the palms are no more and this photo is the result.
I guess it's the price you pay for living in a more temperate climate... I can't get too distressed about the loss of the palms but the plane trees are a different story.
