I think the Arc de Triomphe in Paris is dedicated to the victories of Napoleon. This one in Montpellier, built on the site of a gate in the medieval city walls, is earlier, built for the Sun King, Louis XIV. I've never thought of him as a military man, more for building the Château de Versailles and getting Louisiana named after him. However, it seems that not only was he the longest reigning monarch of any country anywhere ever, 70+ years, but that that reign was mostly occupied with wars, against pretty much every other European power. In fact, Wikipedia says that Louis viewed the brief periods of peace as an opportunity to prepare for the next war.
@bob65 I was taking a French exam at the university and spent three days there - Ive hardly been anywhere since visiting Rocamadour the week before the 1st confinement. The only previous time I was there it rained all the time. It is a fascinating city and maybe worth a visit for you one day, 3,5 hrs by TGV virtually non-stop from Paris Gare de Lyon.
Montpellier est une jolie ville. Louis XIV comme la plupart des monarques de son temps ne souhaitait qu'agrandir son royaume.
