My task for today was to take a picture of "something very Canadian" and this was one of the first things that came to mind as a "very Canadian" food. Okay, I know that this might look a little bit ...unappetizing... to some people, but I promise it's good. For those that are unfamiliar with this food, it originated in Quebec (I think!) and is popular all over Canada. It's a delicious combination of fries, cheese, and gravy.
Normally I NEVER have poutine because I think most places that serve it, use a beef based gravy and therefore as a vegetarian I have avoided it for years. But this tiny little place in Edmonton that only serves poutine, assured me that the gravy is completely vegan.
And for any of you "poutine connoisseurs" I have been told that this poutine is very traditional style.
I'm curious whether or not other people like this, or if people in other places eat something similar??
*after trying it again after so many years, I have to say this was sooooo good
This looks to die for. Great shot!
I'm from small-town Northern Ontario, and we definitely love us some poutine, though I've never heard of any made without a beef or chicken base. Neat!
p.s. You're right about it originating in Québec. Victoriaville, to be exact! :P
@kittykaija thanks! it tasted amazing :) yeah i thought all places made it with beef but was happy about this! i think you can order it with beef gravy too
This looks so good! I don't really know to much about Canada. My baby daddy lives on the border of New York and Canada. So, he goes visits all the time.
Interesting! I've never heard of that. When I lived in Maine some Quebec influences were around, like pork pie. I'll have to see if any of my Canadian friends eat this
Oh my gosh--I totally miss this food! I would have to steer clear of it as well because I'm also a vegetarian. I used to live in Edmonton for many years--I would be all OVER the vegan version!!
Lovely portrait Lauren. 50mm does work well for that, doesn't it? I've been veggie for years, so can't recall if I had poutine before. But I would try it with vegan gravy, for sure. Once. ;)
Yay for vegan poutine!! Soy cheese? I'll definitely try it when I make it up to Canada soon! Thanks for sharing!
In Australia and the US, I'd say that fries, mashed potato and gravy is the closest I've eaten to this...
what the... this looks like heart disease on a plate!! I used to have friends in northern Ireland who used to enjoy chips cheese and mayonaise, marginally more unhealthy. ;)
*** just want to say thanks for all the nice comments on this! it was really so good and now i want it again! but i won't for awhile because as @chewyteeth says it is "heart disease on a plate" lol
I need to try this. In the Uk we have chips & gravey in some regions & some times have chips & melted cheese over the top BUT never the mixture here. At first it sounds awful but now its growing on me. Great capture.........
oooh what lil place is this from? there's a place by the garneau theatre called "la poutine" that i want to try out! maybe from there???
definitely looks traditional! some friends and i went to montreal a couple years ago & had a "traditional" poutine! so tasty!
I had some poutine when I was in Montreal, but only b/c the menu was advertising their regular poutine as "100% vegetarian". I just uploaded a photo of the "dessert poutine" I had (then checked the other poutine tags!), but I had "meal poutine" too. ;)

@spthorne but you need to use a very specific kind of cheese in order for it to be "real" poutine, you should try it lol
@sabrinaromahn thanks Sabrina!
