of the Death's Hawk Moth's caterpillars. It is so beautiful yet such a nasty moth and I do not know what to do about it. It is munching away the leaves of my Jasmin. Later it will become a bee killing moth!
Oh gosh -- it's such an unusual looking creature and it's a great capture of it. But what an awful moth...truly hard to decide whether to let it develop or get rid of it.
Oh, I have the same issue with the caterpillars on my tomato plant. They lay eggs so fast and many. I have started to spray my leaves with water and some soap to prevent them from coming to my plant.......
Ditto what others have said. Gorgeous colors — great shot of it. But we need the bees. Maybe check out the suggestion @louannwarren made? I’m not much of a gardener, so I have no idea what course of action would be the best.
I have to go with the folks who say it should be stopped or deterred. I'd probably call the environmental center here to see what they would suggest as a natural deterrent. I imagine it doesn't have too many predators but knowing what happened to so many of our trees when the Gypsy moths weren't stopped several years ago, I wouldn't want this kind to spread and then ruin both your Jasmin plant and the bee population. It's not a good sign that you found two!
@olivetreeann It really is a bummer! I have four pergolas with Jasmin and there could be some more. We only found them because of all the droppings. I will have to spray them with something ;-(
