Mr Man, our Nuts'n'Bolts man is paying homage to his close relative, Burt Munro, immortalised in bronze. This is a copy of the shell in which he established a world record on his 1920 Indian motorbike on the Salt Flats. Working from his home in Invercargill, he worked for 20 years to highly modify the 1920 Indian motorcycle that he had bought that same year. Munro set his first New Zealand speed record in 1938 and later set seven more. He travelled to compete at the Bonneville Salt Flats, attempting to set world speed records. During his ten visits to the salt flats, he set three speed records, one of which still stands today.
His efforts, and success, are the basis of the motion picture The World's Fastest Indian (2005), starring Anthony Hopkins, and an earlier 1971 short documentary film Burt Munro: Offerings to the God of Speed,[4] both directed by Roger Donaldson.
Mr Man was very annoyed with Yolanda who had had too many red wines with the bikers the night before and didn't feel too well! She managed to throw herself on the bike just as they left!
That last sentence just made me laugh so much specially after reading the serious history of Bert Munroe.....it sort of hit you in face!!! Yolanda with a hang over & a flirt too, Mr Man will have to keep her on a tight rein!!
You know I should have googled Burt Munro when you first mentioned him in your shots. I so enjoyed the movie with Anthony Hopkins. What a great story. (Have travelled on the highway across the Salt Flats many times but have never been on them ; )
Wonderful capture, Maggiemae. So glad Yolanda managed to get on the bike but am a little worried about her ; )
I loved The World's Fastest Indian -- hear Anthony Hopkins made the film because he admired Bert Munro. I also love poor old Yolanda almost falling off the bike . What a wild lady!
Wonderful capture, Maggiemae. So glad Yolanda managed to get on the bike but am a little worried about her ; )
