Waitangi Day NZ by maggiemae

Waitangi Day NZ

HMS Otago anchored just off shore from the Oamaru Harbour and three crew members were here giving out information and being very friendly. You can see the warship just behind them. Public were offered viewing by climbing into an outboard and being taken out there.

As usual Waitangi Day in NZ was an ongoing argument in the North at the Bay of Islands where the ceremony was held. Maoris are protesting about who knows and there is a large police contingent. One activist lady who has been around for a while was asked not to escort the Prime Minister into the ceremony as she has claimed the honour for 12 years. Give another deserving person a chance, but no, she fought and bullied her way into the position and because they didn't want a public hoo ha, she was allowed to get away with it!
The quality of this photo is lovely, so clear with great lighting & colours. Love the sky too & the way it merges with the sea.
My little Max was cross because there was no ''Kindy'' today!

Vee
Well, it looks like it was a pleasant day weather-wise despite the drama!
February 5th, 2013
@vskolnik Thanks Vee - this was taken a long way from the drama up there in the north! We are a very peaceful community!
February 5th, 2013
NIce shot, love the sky in this.
February 5th, 2013
Very cool capture.
February 5th, 2013
What are they looking at I wonder? Happy Waitangi Day, an important day to mark even if they are slugging it out up north.
February 5th, 2013
@happypat Cute!
February 5th, 2013
I never heard of Waitang Day before. The things you learn on the 365. I really find this shot interesting, Mags.
February 5th, 2013
Happy Waitangi Day to you, is it a public holiday for you over there?
February 5th, 2013
Cool... thats a new day on me too. Looked it up on Wikipedia and found it really interesting. Nice shot.
February 6th, 2013
i would have stayed home if i had known it was a holiday.
February 6th, 2013
I love your capture of sunshine and water and sky -- as well as the handsome sailors!
February 6th, 2013
@asutherland1964 Yes, it is Andrew - funny, in the middle of the week!
February 6th, 2013
@carolinedreams They had printed leaflets to give out about the NZ Navy Force, Caroline. Such nice fellows!
February 6th, 2013
Good capture! I especially like how the sky and the sea look in this shot. I heard about the incident you described. I think this may have been on the Internet news.
February 6th, 2013
Nice shot Maggie. Seeing those uniforms reminds me of when my son was in the navy, brought back a few memories.
February 6th, 2013
@catwoman2 Bit young for us, Mary - grandchildren age but I know what you mean!
February 6th, 2013
@pachelbel Their uniforms were absolutely spotless, Veronica!
February 6th, 2013
Oh this is so lovely. Very nice shot, Maggie!
February 6th, 2013
I have not heard of Waitang Day before. Love your shot of the crew members, sea and the sky.
February 6th, 2013
@darsphotos Thanks Darlene - love seeing your comments on my photos!
February 6th, 2013
I love the feel of this shot- the colors are so fresh and bright and the random positions of the people just make it all the more interesting- a capture of a moment in time.
February 6th, 2013
I love we can see the boat....waaaaaaay back there! And the two men in the foreground...sounds like they need to get that woman under control.
February 6th, 2013
@espyetta She was a sweet and very shy lady, Marybeth!
February 6th, 2013
@maggiemae oh wait...I meant the lady who bullied her way into walking with the dignitary
February 6th, 2013
@maggiemae I am sorry that I have not been keeping up, Maggiemae. I will not complain, just another thing that may take me back to the Dr. again. Hurts my left hand, shoulder and neck to type too much for weeks now, and getting worse. Trying to relax as much as possible.
February 6th, 2013
@darsphotos Don't apologise, Darlene - any comment from anyone is a bonus, I feel! Sounds like a physiotherapist you need - they really are good!
February 6th, 2013
@espyetta Oh, that crazy old lady! She deserves to be literally sat on!
February 6th, 2013
Tours like that are really interesting. Did you get to go on board?
February 6th, 2013
@maggiemae haha!
February 6th, 2013
@digitalrn There was such a long long queue, Rick - not the patience!
February 6th, 2013
Great comp...I like the moment you've captured. And love that sky.
February 6th, 2013
@maggiemae I have not heard of a physiotherapist but will see if there is someone to help other than meds. Thank you, Maggiemae.
February 6th, 2013
Nice capture MaggieMae but your commentary was most enlightening. I think we visited that meeting place when we were in Bay of Islands last December. I though it was a place of peace ??
February 6th, 2013
@tonydebont Hone Heki cut down the English flagpole 3 times in 1844 and I think there must have been many relatives of Hone Heki!
February 6th, 2013
@maggiemae The Maori have a fierce reputation.
February 6th, 2013
What a super shot! Love all the bight colors and everything to look at :) And great story :) Love the part that about the lady causing the hooha :) It's funny what some people will do :)
February 6th, 2013
@happypat Thanks Pat for your thoughts about this picture! I liked what you did - sky merging with sea, after I had downloaded it. It is always nice to get tha surprise! It is good that Max loves his kindy that much!
February 6th, 2013
nice composition
February 6th, 2013
Bep
Nice capture, Maggiemae!
February 6th, 2013
Cool shot, Maggiemae. Happy Waitangi Day. Seems whenever there is a celebration someone wants to protest something about it, eh ; )
February 6th, 2013
Really nice candid scene of your special day. Seems there's always a protester around no matter what. I really like the sky capture hanging above the scene, too.
February 6th, 2013
Wow. Wonderful shot and I see the destroyer out there. I love how I always get a bit of glimpse of your world from your photo and your narrative.
February 6th, 2013
Sailors! This is a very cool photo. Isn't that always the way that the bully gets his or her way? Sad, but true.
February 6th, 2013
Wonderful shot.
February 6th, 2013
Oooh thanks Maggie - men in uniform! My brother-in-law is quarter Moari and there are some hilarious family stories. And my sister's favourite Moari quotation is 'Eat up quick we've got guests coming' which I'm afraid to say is still quite fitting! For my nieces! (Good job she won't read this - I couldn't write that on my page!!!)
February 6th, 2013
@judithg Nice to hear from you Judith! When we grew up and there was a knock on the door - it was FHB! Family hold back!
February 6th, 2013
Lovely candid. You have to love a man in uniform don't you ;o) xx
February 6th, 2013
I love this photo of the seamen and their splendid uniforms and the beautiful sky and water. Gorgeous!
February 6th, 2013
Great capture of the whole scene! ,I love that the ship is also visible in the background. The uniforms really stand out !!!
February 7th, 2013
Nice shot of the sailors. Did you go out to see the ship?
February 7th, 2013
Deb
Love the sky peeking out through the clouds :)
February 7th, 2013
We had FHB too. My brother- in- law's mother is quite sniffy about her late husband's Moari roots but they paid for a lot of her children's education. Don't know that it will extend to grandchildren though....
February 7th, 2013
I should point out that my sister doesn't approve of that proverb - she just thought it was accurate!
February 7th, 2013
A great capture ...everyone is just doing their own thing!!
February 7th, 2013
Informative shot and your story!
February 8th, 2013
Great to see these guys in uniform and well done to catch the boat on the horizon.
